Cardiac Tamponade as a Result of Infusion

Abstract
A possible complication with open-end pacemaker catheters can arise when silent perforation of the myocardium occurs. Continued intravenous administration of solutions and medication may lead to pericardial effusion or potentially to lethal cardiac tamponade. Simple methods for detection are available. If prolonged pacing is intended, the end hole should be sealed by an obturator or the catheter should be replaced to avoid this complication.
