Abstract
Analysis of the 1183 techniques forming the twenty-seven Shotokan karate kata (forms) widely practised today shows a significant preference for blocking over counter-offensive techniques. This may be interpreted as evidence to support Karate-do as a Way of self-defense and non-violence.Keywords
