Abstract
The northern part of the Bay of Bengal is characterized by a wide fluctuation in salinity and a narrow range of temperature variation. This hydrographic feature has greatly influenced the coastal fishery. Species contributing to the gillnet catch are limited in number. The bulk of the catch is represented by Indian shad (Hilsa ilisha (Hamilton)), silver pomfret (Pampus argenleus (Euphrasen)), spotted seer (Scomberomorus gallants (Bloch and Schneider)), silver bar (Chirocemrus dorab Forskal), and marine catfishes (Tachysurus spp). Maximum catch occurs when the coast is washed by low salinity water.
