Abstract
FRONTAL lobe surgery for mental disorders was started at the University of Minnesota in 1940. At that time a new form of psychosurgery, termed prefrontal lobectomy in keeping with present day terminology, was introduced. Excision of the frontal areas was performed on each hemisphere in a coronal plane which passes just anterior to the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle. It seemed that by this excision under direct vision a more consistent and exact operation could be performed. It was also hoped that by modifying the excisions it would eventually be possible to determine what areas of the brain would have to be removed in the treatment of certain specific personality aberrations. TECHNIC OF OPERATION This operation has now been performed on 53 patients.
