Abstract
Macerated samples from coal beds in 47 counties of Illinois yielded many genera and species of spores. Many of the genera proved to be good index fossils so that an unknown coal bed could be placed in one of the 4 groups of the Pennsylvanian system. Preliminary observations indicate that coals from outside of Illinois may be correlated with the Illinois beds by means of the microfossils.
