Monophasic and Diphasic Action Potentials of the Stomach

Abstract
Mono-phasic action potentials from the stomach of the dog have a plateau like those of cardiac muscle, confirming previous conclusions from studies on diphasic potentials. Drugs have little effect on these potentials, but epinephrine in high concentrations shortens or abolishes the plateau and produces bursts of activity which may be comparable to the fibrillation of the heart. Whether potentials of visceral muscles can be produced by a muscle consisting of many short independent fibers was examined theoretically. Action potentials of such a system were found to be entirely different from those actually observed from visceral muscle. Properties of visceral muscles indicate that the fibers are connected together so that they represent single muscular units.
