THE QUESTION OF THE DESTRUCTION OF 17,21-HYDROXYCORTICOSTEROIDS BY PHOSGENE

Abstract
Phosgene, a product of the oxidation of CHCl3, was shown to have no destructive effects on CHCl3 solutions of steroids giving the Porter-Silber reaction or on purified urinary CHCl3 extracts. Re-distilled USP or reagents grades of CHCl3 could be stored 3 weeks without harmful effects on these steroids. The effects of other oxidation products of CHCl3 on steroids is being investigated.
