Abstract
In the optimal design of multistage reactors for oxidation of sulfur dioxide, two important cost factors are considered: catalyst and heat exchange. The way to obtain the associated economic function is presented. A complete solution of the reactor train equation must be carried out to obtain each value of this implicit function of ten variables (injections of gas and temperatures in catalyst beds). To optimize the multistage reactor, three direct methods are adapted for a specific treatment of constraints on the variables. Two of these methods (Hooke and Jeeves, simplex) give satisfactory results and it appears possible to make a rational choice between exchangers and injectionsKeywords
