A Note on the Assay of Antigenic Polysaccharides and Vaccines

Abstract
Summary: A method is described for the evaluation of antigenic pneumococcal polysaccharides and vaccines, based on a test commonly used to determine the number of LD50 doses neutralized. Protection was afforded mice by small amounts of SI not previously found protectively antigenic, when mice were infected three days after immunization instead of the usual five. Possibly larger amounts of SI will require longer waiting periods before challenging, and the “paralyzing dose” effect may be apparent rather than real.
