Studies on Antitumor Substances Produced by Basidiomycetes

Abstract
More than 7000 cultures of Basidiomycetes were surveyed for antitumor activity against 3 rodent tumor systems. Fifty cultures representing 20 genera produced, in fermentation media, materials with an inhibitory effect upon Sarcoma 180, Mammary Adenocarcinoma 755, or Leukemia L-1210. Notable features of the antitumor activity were the high specificity of fermentation beers against Sarcoma 180, and the relatively low toxicity of the crude broths. Extensive investigation of microbial systems and the KB and other cell lines as ancillary screening procedures for fractionation products revealed no quantitative correlation between the activity in the animal and the degree of cytotoxicty in these systems.
