Abstract
In this study no evidence was found for the general statement that a meaningful word is a more cohesive configuration than a meaningless pattern of letters. Some subjects experienced greater difficulty in rearranging the letters of meaningful words. The mental set or attitude of the individual subjects was a crucial factor. Awareness of the problem plus a conscious effort to ignore the meaningful configuration might diminish or even overcome interference effects.
