Abstract
Fundamental to our understanding of skin diseases and their presentation is an understanding of the pattern of their development. When we have established the molecular basis of their development we will be in a much better position to control and treat such diseases. The homeobox genes are a family of regulatory proteins that influence pattern formation at many levels. Their presence in skin implicates them in this important role. It seems highly likely that they will be shown to be fundamental to the development of the patterns used in diagnosing skin diseases. Keywords
