Abstract
The professional literature was reviewed to examine parenthood for people with intellectual disability. Parenting after deinstitutionalization; parenting for those already identified as needing assistance; parenting in comparison with other parents; outcomes for the children; and parent experiences before the courts have been addressed. The question, can intellectually disabled parents adequately care for their children? was frequently asked in early studies. Recent attention has been directed to parenting in a social and community context. Heterogeneity, rather than homogeneity of parenting experiences for intellectually disabled parents is clearly demonstrated. The relevance of the findings for potential parenthood for people with intellectual disability is discussed.
