Abstract
Summary: The food of the grey‐breasted helmeted guinea‐fowl (Numida meleagris galeata Pallas) was studied in the Kainji Lake Basin Area of Nigeria. Based on the percentage weights of full crops studied, the contents of the fresh crops were (means ± standard errors): grass seeds, 35±5.5%; insects, 21.6±5.1%; Cyperus bulbs, 17.4±5.1%; fruits of dicotyledons, 11.3±3.0%; leaves and other vegetable matter, 9.9±2.8%; pebbles, 1.9±0.8% and water moisture ingested with food, c. 3%.Seasonality and availability of food of N. m. galeata may be influenced by annual bush burning and by control of flood levels along the draw‐down areas of the lake.Résumé: La nourriture de la pintade casquée (Numida meleagris galeata Pallas) fut étudiée dans la région du Bassin du Lac Kainji au Nigeria. This publication has 8 references indexed in Scilit:
