EFFECT OF ADRENOCORTICOTROPHIN ON [3H]URIDINE INCORPORATION INTO GLOMERULOSAL CELLS OF HYPOPHYSECTOMIZED RAT ADRENALS

Abstract
Department of Anatomy, Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, University of Padua, Italy (Received 28 January 1974) In previous investigations we have shown that adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH), in addition to stimulating the growth of adrenal zona fasciculata, also exerts trophic action on the rat zona glomerulosa (Nussdorfer, Mazzocchi & Rebuffat, 1973). Since the mechanism underlying the trophic action of ACTH on the rat zona fasciculata was found to involve stimulation of both nuclear and mitochondrial RNA synthesis (Nussdorfer & Mazzocchi, 1971), we investigated, by high resolution autoradiography, the effects of ACTH on the incorporation of [3H]uridine into glomerulosal cells of hypophysectomized rat adrenals. Twenty male albino rats (Sprague–Dawley), weighing 120-140 g, were hypophysectomized and divided into two groups. On day 6 after the operation one group was given an i.p. injection of 20 i.u. ACTH (Sigma Chemical Company, St Louis)/kg, 12 h before death. The control group received an i.p. injection of 0·9
