A commensurate-incommensurate modulated magnetic structure: TbFe4Al8

Abstract
A study of the magnetic structure of TbFe4Al8 (I4/mmm) was performed using neutron diffraction of a powder sample. It was found that upon cooling the Fe sublattice orders antiferromagnetically at 140K <TN<180K with moments along ±[1,0,0] and ferromagnetically with moments along [0,1,0]. A ferromagnetic moment is then induced in the Tb sublattice along [1,1,0]. This moment serves as a spiral axis for a spiral having a propagation vector 0.1315[1,1,0]. The moment of the ’’conical spiral’’ thus formed increases sharply to saturation at approximately 20K.
