Abstract
The results of a study of HDTV subband coding using an Infinite-duration Impulse Response (IIR) filter bank is described. The coding scheme consists of using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coding in the lowest frequency band and runlength/entropy coding in the high frequency bands. Coding strategies in representing the information in the different subbands, and the tradeoffs involved in apportioning the budget of bits among the different subbands are described. Issues in the selection and implementation of the analysis and synthesis filter banks are discussed. The effect of varying the order of the analysis and synthesis filters on the reconstruction of the signal is also examined.© (1989) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
