Consultation in Public Health

Abstract
Consultation is discussed as an interpersonal relationship in which giving and taking help occurs, and which has permissiveness as its outstanding feature. The emotional interaction is a prominent determinant of the effectiveness of the relationship, especially reactions to dependency and authority aspects. The process appears to have several elements, viz., request for assistance, development of rapport, diagnosis, working through, and termination. Consultation in public health is influenced by multiple roles of the health agency consultant, by problems in administrative integration of health agencies, and by the nature of inter-agency relationships.
