Abstract
A theoretical treatment is presented of the apparent relative stability of particles in nuclear matter in terms of the process of bound -particle nonmesonic decay. Mean lives for nonmesonic decay of particles imbedded in nuclear fragments such as He, Li,...O, are estimated as ≈- sec. A very brief discussion is given of the bearing of such relatively long mean lives on possible mechanisms of -particle production.
