Abstract
Longer-lived radioactive isotopes of elements can be separated from a mixture of isotopes in passing from one volume to a second by the use of an appropriate intervening barrier so that the shorter-lived isotopes decay before reaching the detector. The separation can most effectively be created by use of a membrane; a purely diffusional barrier is also effective. The techniques are demonstrated in experiments with 3.8-day 222Rn and 56-s 220Rn.Keywords
