Abstract
Transmission of streptomycin (an antibiotic substance obtained from the mold Actinomyces griseus) across the placental barrier is demonstrated. 14 normal women in active labor were given a single intraven. inj. of 250,000 units of streptomycin dissolved in 5 ml. of normal saline. Streptomycin assay of maternal blood, cord blood and amniotic fluid collected at delivery led to the conclusions that (1) streptomycin appears in the cord blood and amniotic fluid following intraven. administration to the mother, (2) streptomycin concs. in the cord blood and amniotic fluid are generally < 1/2 that found in the maternal blood, and (3) streptomycin concs. are very low in specimens of maternal blood, cord blood, and amniotic fluid obtained > 3 hrs. after injn. Keywords
