Abstract
A translation-invariant system of particles in two space dimensions has a state space with a continuous infinity of superselection sectors parametrized by a real number α. In sectors with α≠0, plane-wave quantization of free particles is not possible; the ‘‘freest’’ Hamiltonian is that of charged particles moving in a constant transverse magnetic field. Keywords
