Abstract
A simple technique has been devised to overcome the uncertainties and empiricism of the diffusion method of setting up a liquid column of graded density. This permits the overall density gradient of the liquid and the density at any point within the column to be calculated before the column is set up, allowing considerable precision in the separation of particles and in their density determination. Greater flexibility in the form of the column is possible including the introduction of steps in the density gradient of the liquid.
