Abstract
About 200 scientists gathered from 3 to 7 March 2002 in Adelaide, Australia, to discuss progress in the research on the human pathogenic yeast Cryptococcus neoformans and cryptococcosis. Their interests ranged from basic biology to clinical medicine. Because no parallel sessions were organized, a meeting like this is a real opportunity to learn about developments beyond one's own field of interest. The topics varied widely and included, a.o.: systematics and evolution, ecology, genomics, cryptococcosis in developing countries, host immune responses, pathogenesis, and antifungals. Before the actual meeting a number of workshops were held on genomics, molecular typing, and antifungal susceptibility testing.
