Abstract
We have entered a new era in nursing where whole tiers of nurse management have disappeared. There are fears that those who survived the introduction of general management (1) will soon be sacrificed at the altar of the Government's NHS reforms (2). As the traditional nursing hierarchy crumbles, few tears will be shed by those who have long believed the profession should be led by expert nurses who retain their clinical credibility and authority to practice. The new 'supernurses’, it is claimed, will be specialists, those who have moved beyond advanced nursing practice to become professional leaders within their fields.
