Abstract
Little research has been directed toward elderly parents' response to the death of an adult child. This paper examines concepts in the literature concerning the responses of individuals to the deaths of significant others. This material is integrated with relevant information about the elderly. A model is developed which views the response of older parents to the death of an adult child. It is suggested that formal support systems, informal support systems and the elderly parent's personal attributes interact to influence the older individual's characteristic response to loss. Implications for social workers are discussed, as are methods for intervention in siyuations where the normal grieving process is complicated by intervening variables.
