Abstract
Two types of striated muscle fibers are described for the diaphragm. The one consists of closely packed fibrils"Fibrillenstruktur" and the other is characterized by a massing of fibrils with much sarcoplasm between"Felderstruktur." The first type is associated with the active contraction during respiratory movements and the second with muscle tonus. The two types are intermingled. The historical concepts regarding innervation are discussed.
