Abstract
It is shown that the Sugawara-Sommerfield relation between currents and the energy-momentum tensor, valid in free massless two-dimensional field theories, can be generalized to curved space-time with a gauge-field background. The generalized expression involves covariant point splitting, and allows for the conformal anomaly. Keywords
