Abstract
Priorities for social forestry research are considered under three main headings. Systems Design focuses on the identification of cropping systems which are most productive for different conditions of soil and climate. The Economics of Design and Management focuses on the development of criteria for the selection of those cropping systems which will produce sufficient net economic benefits in different social and ecological conditions to justify investment requirements. The Role of Government considers the legal, administrative, and policy changes which a government needs to make in order to create a social climate that will favour the widespread adoption of social forestry. Great emphasis is placed on the need to establish state, national and international networks of comparative and experimental social forestry projects, to be used by forest departments to determine what does and does not work in different conditions, and why; and the consequent implications for project selection, design and management. The value of this research will not be fully realised unless social scientists are attracted to collaborate with forest and agricultural scientists on an ambitious scale. Keywords
