Pulmonary Adenomatosis of Sheep (Jaagsiekte). I. Ultrastructure of the Tumor

Abstract
Pulmonary adenomatosis of the Awassi sheep is characterized by progressive tumor cell growth in the lungs and by metastatic involvement of various organs. Electron microscopy showed that the neoplastic cells were apparently derived from type-B alveolar epithelial cells. Morphologically, the unique cytosomes, the extensively developed Golgi apparatus, junctional complexes, and microvilli were comparable in type-B alveolar cells and tumor cells. In addition, the tumor cells possessed paired cisternae, membranous whorls, filaments, and glycogen granules that are not seen in normal lung cells. Virus particles of unknown etiological significance were found in thin sections of the tumor.
