Finite Slit-Width Effect in Spectropolarimeters

Abstract
The influence of finite spectral slit width on optical rotatory dispersion measurements in the neighborhood of an absorption band is investigated theoretically. The result is a spurious Cotton-effect, the magnitude of which depends on the relative spectral slit width, the maximum absorption coefficient, and the slope of the rotatory power. Formulae and curves for the effect are given.
