"Deferred Status" Applicants to a Voluntary Home for Aged

Abstract
This study describes the “deferred” waiting list to a voluntary home for aged and compares the characteristics of deferred applicants with those on the “active” list who seek immediate admission. There is analysis of reasons for electing deferred status, circumstances that made continued community living possible and events that altered the decisions over time. The services offered by the agency to this group are discussed in terms of their efFect on the older people concerned and their utility for the institution.
