Abstract
A screening test for identifying prekindergorten children with potential learning problems was conceptualized and developed after determining the need for one procedure which would incorporate the essential elements of many different tests to reflect developmental patterns in the major areas of functioning. The DIAL (Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning) procedure is fully described, listing factors, test development, test procedure, pilot studies, field testing, and statistical analyses. Conclusions based on the statistical analyses and evaluations from the first year of Project DIAL research are included, as well as a discussion of screening problems encountered and recommendations for further exploration and development of assessment procedures for young children. Keywords
