PATHOGENESIS OF CANDIDA ALBICANS INFECTION FOLLOWING ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY I

Abstract
Using quantitative technics to study the effect of various antibiotics on the growth of C. albicans, the authors found that both oral and parenteral prepns. of aureomycin significantly stimulate the in vitro growth of this fungus; penicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and terra-mycin had no effect, either stimulatory or inhibitory. Several suggested explanations of this phenomenon are discussed. Direct stimulation by aureomycin could account only for the greater frequency with which this antibiotic is involved in this process, but probably is not the fundamental mechanism.
