Abstract
The macroscopic and microscopic examination of the gonads of 263 specimens of Acipenser fulvescens Raf. from the Nottaway River has enabled accurate observations to be made of several aspects of the reproduction of sturgeons in the streams flowing into James Bay.Spawning begins in June and lasts until the end of the month.Spawning places are numerous as every small rapid in the streams is a possible site.Until the fish are 9 years old, gonads are immature and the sex cannot be determined. After that age, development to sexual maturity takes place slowly. This is reached when the females are between 20 and 23 years of age (90–100 cm; 4.3–9 kg) and the males between 18 and 20 (85–95 cm; 3.9–5.2 kg).Females live longer than males, 80 years as against 55.The importance of protection and management of this species is briefly discussed.
