Abstract
Speed regulators for motor drives can be classified into four types according to the degree of accuracy and the response time required for a given application. Formulas are presented which can be used to determine the number of bits and the sampling time which are required of a microprocessor for a thyristor drive microprocessor-based speed regulating system. A systematic approach is also proposed which application engineers can use to evaluate and select the most adequate microprocessor from those commercially available for different types of digital speed regulators. Keywords
