Abstract
Bacteria-free cultures of Trichomonas in CPLM medium produced characteristic lesions in albino mice if the trichomonads were injected by the intra-abdominal, intramuscular, or subcutaneous route. One strain each of T. vaginalis, T. gallinae and T. foetus was used. The duration of the exptl. disease depended on the number of parasites introduced. After high doses the infection lasted up to 8-12 weeks, frequently developing after an incubation period of 5-15 days. The intra-abdominal infection with all 3 spp. produced a chronic peritonitis which was fatal after high infective doses of T. foetus, which also led to an infection with the marked clinical symptom of ascites. Intramusc. infection with all 3 spp. was followed by large abscesses of the legs. All spp. also produced subcutaneous lesions after injection of comparatively small numbers of parasites. This type of infection was used for exptl. evaluation of chemotherapeutic agents. Keywords
