Distribution of cutaneous hyperalgesia

Abstract
Cutaneous hyperalgesia, induced after a noxious stimulus (hypertonic saline) is introduced into a muscle, occurs at a fairly predictable site which is determined by the segmental innervation of the muscle. Following the introduction of the hypertonic saline, the pain becomes localized to a discrete area; on this evidence, the authors offer the opinion that trigger zones are often sites of re ferred pain and not primary pain sites.
