Potentialities and Limitations of Medical Data on Official Birth Certificates

Abstract
Improvement in the completeness and accuracy of reporting of supplemental medical data on birth certificates was obtained by active supervision of the reporting process and by changes in the design of the supplement and in the information requested. Analyses of the data collected revealed a significant increase in the proportion of pregnant women who received no prenatal care. The higher neonatal morality rates in live-born infants of women who received no prenatal care appeared to be independent of the socioeconomic level of the mother. The apparent differences found in the obstetric and newborn experience of individual hospitals require further study.
