Abstract
Currently available information is summarized as to the mechanisms responsible for the hypo-cholesterolemic effects of the sitosterols, nicotinic acid, pyridoxine, neomycin, benzmalacene, heparin, estrogens, triparanol, steroids, desiccated thyroid and thyroid analogues including dextro-thyroxine. A tabulation of all drugs alleged to be hypocholesterolemic agents in the period 1950-1961 is included. In 32 patients with angina pectoris 7 failed to demonstrate a 20% fall in serum cholesterol when receiving 4 mg of dextro-thyroxine daily and in 5 others the hypocholesterolemic response was not sustained.
