Construction and use of summer nests by the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)

Abstract
Radio-tracking was used to study the construction and use of summer nests by hedgehogs living on a west London [UK] golf course. Substantial nests were used throughout the summer. Several nests were available to hedgehogs at any one time and their use was unpredictable; some sexual differences in nest use were apparent. It was shown that one hedgehog may use the nest of another, thus providing a potential route for the exchange of ectoparasites.
