Abstract
The attachment of radon progeny to cigarette smoke aerosol particles results in an increased risk of lung cancer. Although the question has been extensively discussed, no systematic studies have been carried out to characterize the system of radon progeny and cigarette smoke particles. The purpose of this work was to undertake detailed studies in order to understand the relationship between the attached and unattached fractions of radon progeny in the presence of cigarette smoke particles in the air. The studies include measurements of the size and activity distributions of the aerosol particles under controlled conditions of radon concentration, cigarette smoke concentration, and relative humidity. Keywords
