Abstract
The electronic structure of ferrocene (biscyclopentadienyl iron) is considered by constructing MO's from the AO's of the iron atom and the MO's of the cyclopentadienyl radicals. The 18 valence electrons of the compound are distributed among these MO's so that 16 occupy bonding, and 2 nonbonding MO's. This electron distribution permits an interpretation of the stability, the magnetic susceptibility and the absorption spectrum of ferrocene.
