Combined activity of clindamycin and gentamicin on Bacteroides fragilis and other bacteria

Abstract
In vitro experiments showed that strains of Bacillus fragilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherlchia coli, Proteus, mirabiis, and anaerobic Gram-positive cocci were killed by combinations of clindarnycin and the arninoglycosides gentamicin, or kanamycin with no evidence of antibiotic antagonism. The combination of clindaxnycin and gentamicin was superior to that of clindamycin and kanamycin especially for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staph. aureus and B. fragilis. Clindamycin and gentamicin acted synergistically on cultures of B.fragilis, indicating that the combination might be useful in the treatment of serious infections with a mixture of B. fragilis and other bacteria, and in B. fragills endocarditis.
