Abstract
Canada's North-West Territories (NWT) represent one of the world's last great wilderness frontiers. This vast area is characterised by a wealth of natural and cultural resources that make it an increasingly attractive tourism destination for a variety of travellers including ecotourists. Given these assets, the government of the NWT would like to use them for the economic benefit of its residents albeit in a sustainable fashion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the issues facing tourism in the NWT within the broader context of change that the North is currently experiencing. Prior to discussing the fundamental issues facing tourism in the NWT, past and present tourism patterns in the NWT will be reviewed along with current tourism policy. Emerging issues will then be discussed using Murphy's (1985) model of the tourism community as a framework. Keywords
