Abstract
A description of the synthesis and properties of K phenolphthalein disulfate, which was used as a substrate for testing for the presence of arylsulfatase (phenolsulfatase) in 212 strains from a wide range of bacterial species is given. 73 of these strains were also tested for the presence of this enzyme using K 1-naphthylsulfate. The results obtained with the 2 substrates are in general agreement. Under the test conditions, arylsulfatase was detected only in certain strains of salmonellae and mycobacteria. Cell-free aqueous extracts containing arylsulfatase were prepared from Mycobacterium piscium. N.C.T.C. 2291, and these were used in a preliminary study of the properties of the enzyme. Keywords
