Potential Elites in Ghana and the Ivory Coast a Preliminary Comparison

Abstract
This study examines patterns of social recruitment in two highly selective systems of secondary education in two adjoining African states with differing colonial and educational traditions. Marked differentials occur between two groups of sampled students of roughly equivalent academic status in the two areas. Ghanaian students are iniformly drawn from higher socioeconomic groups than their Ivory Coast counterparts. However, in relation to population characteristics the two systems appear to function in a similar manner. Furthermore, both groups are characterized by a considerable degree of uniformity concerning career aspirations, expectations, and perceptions of future roles.
