Abstract
Attempts to use manoyl oxide [8α,l3-epoxylabd-14-ene (5)] and related compounds for the formation of compounds with ambergris-type odours are described. The acetal(34) possesses an ambergris-type odour of strength comparable to that of the highly odoriferous acetal(27). Attempts to convert 2-oxomanoyl oxide (6) and manoyl oxide into the ethers (9) and (10), while still retaining the original cyclic ether groups, are reported.
