Abstract
The presenting symptom of polycythemia may be neurasthenia, migraine, symptoms of cardiovascular and renal disease, gastro-intestinal disorders or peripheral vascular disease. Polycythemia should be considered under these conditions, as well as in the differential diagnosis of brain tumor, peptic ulcer and hemorrhagic diathesis. There may be a history of multiplicity of symptoms, vascular disturbances of the extremities, and symptoms referable to the nervous system. Physical signs are dilated retinal vessels, splenomegaly, heavily coated, fissured tongue and red hands. All elements from the bone marrow are increased in the peripheral blood, with an increase in the hematocrit and the blood vol. Albuminuria, occasionally casts, may be present. Keywords
