Recombination of chlorine atoms on surfaces. Part 1.—E.s.r. studies with pyrex, silica, metal and salt coated surfaces

Abstract
E.s.r. has been used in conjunction with a flow system to measure the surface recombination coefficient, γCl, for Cl(2P) atoms on a variety of surfaces including Pyrex, silica, metal and salt coatings. The values of γCl obtained range from ∼1 × 10–5 for silica treated with H2SO4 or H3PO4 to ∼5 × 10–2 for AgCl. On a silica surface γCl increases slowly with increase of temperature, and at T∼900 K is about twice the value at 298 K.
